This is a presale question. I am looking for a way to implement Klarna properly in my Joomla store. Currently, I use J2Store and they have Klarna plugin. But the way it functions is that first, the customer has to fill their details in the J2Store checkout form and again in the Klarna form. This is confusing and frustrating. On top of that, the data is not moving back and forth between Klarna and J2Store backend, so the merchant has to visit frequently the Klarna portal to make sure all sales are approved.

The way Klarna "should" work is that it replaces the checkout form altogether, and makes buying easy by allowing the customer to log in to his Klarna account and pull all the payment details from there. Then the order and customer details are pushed back to the store backend from Klarna, and once the merchant approves (ships) the order, the order is automatically "approved" at Klarna's end and the money can be paid to the merchant.

My question is, how does your plugin handle this?

  • Is the Klarna form replacing the checkout process of Pro2Store?
  • Is the customer data returned automatically from Klarna, ending up as normal Pro2Store customer data?
  • Is it fully connected to Klarna, so when I change the order status in Pro2Store order list, the information will go to Klarna automatically?

Thank you very much for this info in advance! :)

This is a great question and one we thought deeply about while developing the plugin.

The main issue with a Klarna checkout integration with a system like Pro2Store is "shipping calculation". In order for Pro2Store to calculate shipping, the customer much enter an address. This then calculates the total and sends it into the Klarna checkout.

So this forced us down the path you describe... the customer having to submit their details twice.. once for Pro2Store and once for Klarna.

However, the next version of the Klarna Plugin will replace the Pro2Store checkout... but will not calculate shipping in the traditional sense. Only "flat rate" shipping per item.

It was have to ignore weight and zone based shipping.

I'll be announcing when this change is ready.

Regarding the "capture" process...

No, Pro2Store has a setting to "capture" the sale immediately. This means your merchant won't have to visit Klarna over and over... all sales will be captured within Pro2Store.

There is also a "Shipped" integration planned for the next release.

To sum up, the current Klarna Checkout for Pro2Store won't do everything you need, but the next version will be much closer to your desired functionality.

Thank you Ray for your detailed reply! I appreciate it.

Good to hear things are evolving, and yes I know this payment plugin is particularly tricky.

Regarding the capture process, I just talked with Klarna sales team last week and they said that automatic capturing is not allowed. This is because they don't want to start invoicing or charging the customer before the product has been delivered. This conversation was with Klarna's team in Finland, but I don't think their policies are very different elsewhere. The conversation started because automatic capturing was exactly what I was doing with my J2Store site, and they didn't like that at all.

I guess what they don't know won't hurt them, so shipping immediately is a way to go. But still, I wouldn't count on that. It would be interesting to hear if you had conflicting information regarding this. Anyway, no rush with replies, better spend your time coding new extensions. :D

It's interesting that they include auto capturing in their API yet discourage it...!

I'll keep the function in the Pro2Store plugin ... it's up to merchant if they want to take the chance! ;)

I just tested the Klarna plugin on the demo website and it is quite smooth.

I was left wondering, is there any way to auto-populate the Klarna fields with the content from Pro2 checkout fields...? Probably not, as it is in a separate iframe. I assume someone would have done that already. :(
